Institute Defines Role of Journalists From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos Nigerian media practitioners have been described as primary stakeholders in social development with a central role in the peace process across the country. Executive Director, International Centre for Gender and Social Research (INTER-GENDER), Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, made this assertion during an interactive dinner with press men in Jos. He noted that Senator Ibrahim Nasir Mantu's derogatory comments about the Nigerian press was faulty as over the years, pressmen have played an active and sustainable role in the fight for and entrenchment of democracy. His words: "I want to reiterate the importance of the media in national development. It is an understatement to say that a responsible media is a must in the development of any country. The media informs, shapes and influences opinions. It encourages dialogue and has viable roles in increasing understanding and ensuring peaceful co-existence in and between communities. The media is also important in leveraging diversity and articulating those values that bind us together." He lamented the unfortunate crises in the southern part of Plateau and some parts of Benue State, adding that democaracy was under serious threat.
