FERMA to Demolish Illegal Structures in Lagos
By Ben Nwabuwe

Federal Emergency Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has mapped out plans to demolish illegal structures constructed beyond the specified limit, thereby blocking the drainage channels that made it impossible for the agency to complete the construction of drainage.

The affected structures along Ijora Causeway-7UP roundabouts includes Leventis Power building, Massy-Fergusan, Iveco Nig Plc, Incar House, Nulec Industry Ltd, Niger Polls, Bendico building among other structures, including shanties built under the fly over bridge.

The Special Adviser to the Minister of Works, Allhaji Babatunde Rotinwa, stated this over the weekend, while briefing the Lagos State Monitoring and Evaluation Committee on the direct labour maintenance agency under the Operation 500 roads.

The committee is made up of the Federal Controller of Works Lagos State, Adedolapo Adeniji, Lagos Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Alhaji Mohammed Muritala Ashorobi, who is also the chairman of committee, Mr. O R Salam of Federal Road Safety Commission, Alhaji Bola Ogunyeje of National Association of Road Transport Owners and the police among others.

Ashirobi frowned at the way and manner the structures were erected beyond the building limit without consideration, appealing to the owners of those structures to assist government on his plans to rehabilitate roads in Lagos and the nation at large, urging them to remove their structures as quick as possible to enable government construct drainage in the interest of the newly repaired roads.

He commended the job done by the agency, stating that the roads were not motorable before the repair. "Boroni Prono, Total filling station and CFAO Motors abandoned their premises because of flood, but now they are back. There is need to construct the drainage as quick as possible to evacuate flood," he stressed.

Eng. (Mrs.) B A IIlemore told the committee that the owners of those structures has been served notice, adding that the demolition would commence soon to enable them construct drainage.
