Why We Fired WEMPCO, By Duke From Amby Uneze in Calabar For not observing the Memorandum of Under-standing (MOU) of the concession which they signed with the state government in the interest of their catchment area, despite series of petitions from within and outside the country about their operations, the Chinese firm, Western Metal Proce-ssing Company Limited (WEMPCO) had to be closed down by Cross River State government. Governor Donald Duke, who made the clarification yesterday in Ikom while flagging off the Forestry Commission Year 2003 royalty payment to 378 communities in the state, stated that the company short-changed the people as it did not build schools, roads, health centers, bridges nor provided them with water. However, WEMPCO has continued to appeal to the state government to rescind her decision as they promised to have a change of heart, even as they claimed they were not involved in the accusations leveled against them by government. Duke, who presented cheques of N16.8 million as forestry royalties to these communities, disclosed that WEMPCO, which started logging and processing operations in 1993 in the state, had lived above the law and disregarded his warnings during the commissioning of its factory in 2002. The governor urged the communities in the forest zone to join hands with government to preserve the environment because the future generation need to be aware of the potentials of the forest. Duke admonished them to be serious about the crusade to curb the unnecessary felling of trees which is unfair for children yet unborn, adding that the state government would be passionate and stop at nothing to see that the commission enforces its work.
