NEPA Spends N28b on New Power Projects
From Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja

A total of N28.659 billion has so far been expended on four new power generating plants located at Geregu - Ajaokuta Kogi State, Papalanto and Omotosho in Ogun State and Delta Power station by the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA).

The projects, which were among the series of power re-enforcement initiatives being embarked upon by the Federal Government to enable the authority achieve significant leap in power generating capacity, are expected to come on stream latest by December, 2006.

A detailed statistics made available to THISDAY by a Presidency source, showed that payments totaling N6 billion were made to Siemens, the engineering company handling the power plant at Geregu in two installments of N4 billion in the first quarter and N2 b in the second quarter.

The Geregu plant has a projected capacity of 424 MW and according to contract figures is estimated to gulp N32 billion when completed.

About N5 billion each was paid to the two Chinese firms - SEPCO and CNEC handling the construction of the power stations at Papalanto and Omotosho.

In line with the contract terms, NEPA was expected to fund the project to the tune of 35 per cent of the total cost put at N15.8 billion while the firms bear the balance.

The targeted power generation for Papalanto and Omotosho plants is 335 MW each.

Further information showed that the Authority has so far disbursed N7.232 billion to Marbeni of Japan working on the 150 MW-Delta power stations, out of the $54 million contract sum.

The source said even with this release, the authority still requires substantial sum if the deadline for the completion of the projects were to be met.

THISDAY gathered that work on the other approved electricity facility to be cited at Ala-Oji in Abia State was said to be undergoing Due Process evaluation after which approvals could then be given for the award of its contract.

It would be recalled that FG recently approved the release of about N33 billion to NEPA meant for rehabilitation of existing power facilities and building brand new ones.

The management of the power utility company earlier in the year said it has set a target of achieving above 5000MW before the end of 2007 and presently it has been able to feed 3363 MW into the national grid.
