FG to Create 18m Jobs By 2006, Says Ogbeh
From Chuks Okocha in Abuja

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Audu Ogbeh, has said the Federal Government would create 18 million additional jobs by 2006 through the ban on importation of rice and other items.

Ogbeh gave this assurance over the weekend in Abuja, after visiting a farm center at Karzana in Jiwa District, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

He said the ban on the importation of rice will be in the overall interest of the nation and would enhance the revenue generation of the Federal Government.

"The ban on importation of rice would create jobs for 18 million people in this country. These are 18 million farmers, millers, marketers, and distributors. We are going to stop the importation of rice by 2006 so that our children can have a future. When we stop importing rice, we need 1,000 rice mills in Nigeria in the next three years.

"By 2006, we shall stop importing rice because right now, we are importing three million tons of rice every year. I am talking of 33,000 trailer loads of rice every year."

He further explained that, "If we do not create jobs to enable parents of younger ones to be able to pay their school fees, they will never make it to where we have made it."

Ogbeh said the future of Nigeria laid in agriculture, stating that, "the only future the future generation of this country will have is in production. We cannot afford to continue to be a nation of importers, a nation of zero production.

"We have started the cassava revolution. In another six months, we shall be exporting cassava not only to Europe but other parts of Africa."

Earlier, Chairman of AMAC, Mr. Zephaniah Jisalo assured that his council was determined to deliver dividends of democracy.
