Shekarau Seeks Understanding on Almajiri From Josephine Lohor in Abuja Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has advised people to appreciate the fact that there is a clear distinction between the Almajiri or Quranic school system and the street children or Yandaba who roam the streets. Speaking after leading a delegation of the organising committee on the 50th anniversary celebration of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) on a visit to Vice President Atiku Abubakar at the State House, he said what brought such children to the streets was poverty, because "the teachers who use to keep them can no longer feed themselves as well as the children." "In the 50s, 60s and up to the 70s, with the small amount of money, the teachers could survive. They could maintain the children, but these days, when the cost of living is very high, we must find another way of maintaining both the teachers and children so that they remain in school and stop them from roaming the streets," he added. The governor, who disclosed that a lot of money was going into this, stated that MSSN anniversary would involve a N250 million appeal fund for the construction of a befitting national secretariat, presentation of scholarly papers and discussions. While speaking on the Almajiri phenomenon, Shekarau noted that " I do not want us to always see it as a major problem and I want people to separate the Almajiri school system from the so-called Yandaba popularly called street children.
