Globacom Offers Gifts to Subscribers at One
Globacom, Nigeria's Second National Operator (SNO) has unveiled a bouquet of gifts for all subscribers on its mobile network to mark its first year in operation. The network, which launched its operations on August 29 last year, would tonight on NTA network service tell the story of how it achieved the status of Africa's fastest growing network.
In the anniversary bonanza, any subscriber who recharges with a N500 card would be entitled to send two free Glo to Glo SMS while subscribers who recharge with N1000 or other denominations would be entitled to send five free Glo to Glo SMS. The free Glo to Glo SMS would be available with every recharge made before September 30.
"This is without prejudice to the number of cards bought and the number of cards loaded in a day and every subscriber who recharges within this period would benefit from the package. Its our way of saying thank you to the subscribers for their patronage in the past one year," said Subhra Das, Group Director of Marketing and Strategy.
As part of the anniversary bonanza, Glo Mobile offered all its postpaid and prepaid subscribers free Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) till the end of September.
"The MMS allows users to send pictures, text and sound combined as a single message to other phones or to email addresses. The pictures can even be short video clips or animated images. While MMS phones, which have recently become popular with enhanced features like camera and polyphonic ringtones, can be used to prepare and send MMS messages, the recipient phone can be either a MMS phone or a non-MMS phone. Where an MMS message is sent to a non-MMS phone, the recipient receives an SMS indicating the internet address where the MMS message can be retrieved from the internet and a password to retrieve the message," he explained.
The MMS can also be used to send polyphonic ringtones and personalised ringtones.
Another gift being offered by Globacom as part of its anniversary bonanza is the opportunity for its customers to use Mobile Internet, again free until September 30.
The mobile internet service runs on top of Glo Mobile's 2.5G network. The 2.5G network runs GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), the next generation data service operating on first class mobile networks worldwide. This data service made the experience of accessing customised websites from the subscriber's handset a lot faster and cheaper than similar services currently available. Mobile internet offered high speed and cost efficient browsing and access to e-mail on the subscriber's mobile phone without the need for a computer.
The bonanza would continue till the end of September.
Since Globacom rolled out its network, it has amassed a 1.1 million strong subscriber base and has deployed one of the most modern and sophisticated networks in Africa. It is currently spreading fast in many nooks and crannies of this country and would soon launch service in about 20 cities in the Northern part of the country.
Also, the network last week launched its Gateway operation by commissioning its switch in London while other switches in France, Germany, USA, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates and Australia would be launched soon.
