NUJ Cautions FG over Labour Reforms
From Hammed Shittu in Osogbo

The Federal Government has been called upon to listen to the wishes of the people over the labour reform bill now before the National Assembly.

The five-day all Nigerian Conference of Editors held at Ada, Osun State, ended with an appeal to the Federal Government to allow the nation's workers determine the shape their union would take.

In a communique, which was jointly signed by the President, Nigerian Guild of Editors, Alhaji Baba Dantiye and the General Secretary, Mrs Angela Agaowike, said that leaving workers to decide the fate and shape of the union would bring peace and harmony to the country.

" We have noted the reasons put forward by the Presidency and current objection to it (the bill) by labour, forceful democratization of labour should not occupy the government now.

"The federal government should allow the nation's workers the right to determine the shape of their union rather than forcing NLC to be democratised," the communique stressed.

Raising an alarm over the high rate of poverty among jounalist in the country, the NGE called on journalists to cultivate a new orientation towards personal financial planning and investment in order to boost their standard of living.

The NGE stressed that all possible efforts should be geared towards establishing a foundation that would cater for retired editors, adding that there should be a mandatory training program for media practitioners, which would equip them to perform excellently.

The conference of editors also maintained that, " to discharge watchdog responsibility effectively," media practitioners were enjoined to read widely and update their knowledge in order for them to better inform the masses.
