Ebonyi
From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki
Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Ebonyi State University, Prof. Anaezionwu Okoro, has enjoined members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to always uphold the tenets and ethics of the profession in the discharge of their duties.
Okoro who gave the charge during the inauguration/handover for the 2004-2006 officers of the Nigerian Medical Association, Ebonyi State Branch, described medicine as one of the oldest professions which should be practised with conscience and dignity because human lives are involved.
The Professor who chaired the occasion, advised practitioners to always register first as members of the NMA before they join their specialist professional associations stating that "the NMA is still number one".
In an inaugural lecture, a Chief Consultant Physician at the Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki, Dr. Basil Ezeokpo traced the history of NMA in Ebonyi State, which he said started in the state in 1997 with members less than 60 doctors, but has grown to more than 300 members today.
Ezeokpo said the NMA Abakaliki branch has participated in NEC meetings, delegates meetings and in National Industrial Dispute Activities.
He also stressed that welfare of members has not been neglected as the association has made generous contributions towards the treatment of sick members within and outside the country.
He stressed the need for aggressive membership drive and to extend the activities of the association beyond Abakaliki Zone to cover other zones like Afikpo Zone, which are either dead, or in slumber.
The Medical Consultant stressed the need for members to learn to strike a balance between financial gain and the limitations of ones competence, adding that doctors must always keep medical records of their patients.
In a remark the outgoing chairman, Dr. J.E. Onuorah expressed appreciation to members and the Ebonyi State government for her co-operation to his executive throughout his tenure.
He said that his executive had laid a solid foundation for the in-coming executive, stressing that where as he inherited only N10, 000.00 when he tool over in 2001, he was leaving behind more than N600, 000.00 in the cofers of the association, in addition to purchasing official car, a Mercedes V-Boot, for the association.
