In its effort to
actualise the N8.5 billion Bayelsa State Airport, multinational oil firms and
other corporate organisations operating in the state have been urged to support
the state government.
This appeal was made
by the Senior Special Assistant (Revenue Generation) to the State Governor,
Chief Kune Igoni, stating that teamwork would facilitate early completion of
the airport scheduled for November 2006.
Speaking with Daily
Independent in
Yenagoa, the governor’s aide noted that the capital-intensive nature of
the project made the call for
support imperative, advising companies, banks and wealthy indigenes of the
state not to sit on the fence, as everybody would benefit from the airport when
it becomes functional.
“Governor
Diepreye Alamieyeseigha should be encouraged to enable the gigantic project see
the light of the day. The project should not be left alone for the state
government to fund since it is pre-occupied with other meaningful projects in
the state,” Igoni said.
According to him, the
state would break the jinx with the construction of a befitting airport without
bank loan, averring that the airport project would create employment among the
youths and enhance the revenue profile of the state.
