A galaxy of egg heads in Igbo
intellectual, political, economic and spiritual sphere converged in Enugu for
three days last week and declared that the apparent disinterestedness of the
people to privatisation is due to long years of injustice perpetrated against
them by the Federal Government.
Seizing the opportunity of the South East
Zonal Consultative/Enlightenment Forum organised by the Office of the Special
Assistant to the President on Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), the leaders
observed that government should redress the long injustice to assuage their
fears in the privatisation programme.
Specifically, the leaders said,
“The seeming lack of interest of Ndi Igbo to participate in the
privatisation programme has historical antecedents such as Federal
Government’s pauperisation of Ndi Igbo by giving each individual
£20 or N40 after the civil war irrespective of amount of money saved in
the bank compounded by Abandoned Property Policy.”
Led by President General of Ohaneze
Ndigbo, Prof. Joe Irukwu and joined by others like Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Justice
Chukwudifu Oputa, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyawu, Prof. ABC Nwosu, Dr. Okechukwu
Itanyi, Mr. K.A Arinze, Igwe N. Achebe, Chief Achike Udenwa, Prof. Joy Ogwu,
Justice Eze Ozobu, among many others, the Igbos alleged that the current
privatisation programme was reserved for core investors, which strategically
excludes Ndi Igbo by manipulative design and implementation.
