The Secretary-General of the Supreme
Council for Islamic Affairs (SCIA), Dr. Abdul Lateef Adegbite on Sunday doubted
the efficacy of the country’s economic reform programmes, saying it was
not built on a workable foundation. He, however, called on the federal
government to take its queue after Islamic economic master plans, which he said
could tackle the problems of economic stagnancy and under-development in the
country.
Adegbite, who said this while addressing
newsmen at the 5oth anniversary of the Muslim Students’ Society of
Nigeria (MSSN) organized by the Lagos State Chapter, a group he was its
founding president, said it was time Nigerian government took a pause and
fashion out a workable economic master plan for the betterment of the Nigerian
people.
“Nigeria is in a very big economic
ordeal: we talk about economic reforms everyday but without any headway, no
progress is made out of these economic reforms. Instead Nigerians continue to
wallow in abject poverty. This is occasioned by lack of good and workable
economic policies. “Let our government subscribe to Islamic Economic
System, which caters for everybody. The system has all it takes to take the
country out of the current economic under development it is witnessing
now,” said Adegbite.
