Parties to Sudanese crisis resumed talks
on Sunday after a 24-hour boycott by the rebel groups who protested alleged
killings still going on in Darfur region by government sponsored group, the
Janjaweed.
In an effort to beat the United Nations
Security Council deadline that expires today, the meeting which started around
5.40 p.m. due to power outage at the conference venue lasted till late in the
night.
It was gathered that the issue of sending
more foreign monitors to access humanitarian situation in Darfur dominated
discussions. This arose from the report of the rebel group on humanitarian
issue in the region that was presented at Sunday meeting.
Though no conclusive decision was reached
during the meeting, a member of AU commission expressed reservations on the
ability of the AU-initiated peace talks to find an amicable solution to the
crisis before the expiration of UN deadline.
Out of four-point agenda adopted for
discussion, only the humanitarian issue was being treated, while talk on the
political question is the major point of agitation by the rebels. Talks on the
economic and social factors are yet to begin.
