Plantation farming is to get a boost in
Abia State with the government proposing to release about a million banana
suckers for distribution to farmers free of charge.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and
Rural Development, Chief Johny Ukpabi, said at the weekend that the ministry
had released 400 amazon cocoa seedlings to each of the wards in Bende Local
Government for planting.
Ukpabi noted the importance of
agriculture in sustaining democratic ideals by ensuring food security. He,
therefore, called on youths to embrace farming rather than seeking for
white-collar jobs that are not available.
The government has flagged off
seminar/workshop for road users, commercial motorcyclists and taxi drivers at
the Ohafia Local Government headquarters, Ebem.
Governor Orji Uzor Kalu said the seminar
was initiated because no responsible government could fold its arms and allow
its people to perish at an alarming rate in road accidents.
Represented by the Commissioner for
Housing and Transport, Chief Toni Ururuka, Kalu said the government embarked on
massive rehabilitation of its roads so as to make state roads accident free.
Kalu said the government bought six brand new luxury buses
for the transport corporation to ease the problem of transportation in the
state.
