Heads may roll in Edo police command
VINCENT ADEKOYE,
Benin
HEADS may
roll among the top brass of Edo State police command following last week’s
killing of eight policemen by armed robbers.
Already, palpable fear has gripped many of
the top brass following the realisation that the Presidency is determined to
halt the spate of armed robbery attacks in the state.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr.
Tafa Balogun, as if reading the mind of his bosses on the deteriorating security
situation in Edo, had, barely 48 hours after the eight cops were killed,
deployed hundreds of mobile policemen to aid the efforts of seemingly embattled
security agencies on the grounds.
Reports said the decision to axe and
redeploy some of the heads of security agencies in the state is as a result of
the disturbing security reports in the past few months which indicated increased
activities of robbers and unhindered cult-related crimes.
Of great embarrassment to the Presidency,
an Aso Rock source said, is the report of the investiture of one of the security
helmsmen in the state (name withheld) as patron of a fragmented and
crisis-ridden union in Benin at a time when robbers are killing and maiming the
defenseless residents.
No fewer than 17 innocent persons have
been killed in the different parts of the state in the past few months by armed
robbers and cultists who now operate boldly.
Meanwhile, Gov. Lucky Igbinedion has
condoled with the IGP on the death of the eight policemen.
A statement from the Chief Press secretary
to the governor, Mr. Lucky Wasa said the governor, who was visibly saddened by
the ugly news, assured that the state government will put all necessary
machinery in place to assist the police authorities in fishing out those behind
the dastardly act.
While noting that the policemen died in active service,
the governor assured the families of the slain of the state government’s
assistance.
