‘PDP 'll Not Condone Indiscipline'
From Joseph Ushigiale and Christopher Isiguzo in Owerri, 12.01.2004
P resident Olusegun Oba-sanjo has warned that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not hesitate to axe erring state Chairmen and members of the party who continue to act in ways that would undermine the future success of the party. Speaking at an interaction with the Imo people on the last day of his two-day visit in Owerri, Obasanjo said "the party can only progress on the strength of discipline, order and cohesion exhibited by its members." While reacting to pleas to reverse the current suspension placed by National Working Committee (NWC) on state PDP Chairman, Alex Obi, Obasanjo said "l'll have to ensure that discipline is maintained in the party as the leader." He warned that the party can only make progress if there is discipline, "it would not hesitate to come down on some states that err when necessary." On the suspended chairman, he urged the aggrieved to appeal to National Executive Committee(NEC) of the party. "lf you are not satisfied with the decision of NEC, take it to the National Convention, if it also fails, then you take it to God, because we have barred our members from taking our disputes to court." Besides, the President during his visit presented a 31-year-old blind Mass Communication graduate, Mr. Cajetan Nwachukwu, with automatic employment. Nwachukwu had asked why adequate provisions in term of appointment and employment opportunities were not provided for the disabled. Obasanjo who said his administration is an equal opportunity employer, immediately offered automatic employment to the blind man in the office of his Senior Special Adviser, Mrs. Remi Oyo. On micro-credit for small and medium scale enterprises(SMEs), Obasanjo said many opportunities existed for international grants, which would assist genuine businesses, regretting that except the tight things are done, such grant would elude interested companies in Nigeria, adding that his Economic Adviser had been given mandate to liase with genuine businesses and international foundations to facilitate speedy approvals for the grants. He said about N6 billion is being provided for in the next year's budget from the Bank of Agriculture and lndustry including mortgage to cater for micro-credit for small enterprises that would require such facilities.
