Obasanjo, NUJ, Others Mourn Oseni

The remains of the frontline journalist and former Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Chief Mikail Olatunji Oseni, were yesterday committed to mother earth at his family compound in Keesi, Abeokuta. Eminent personalities across the country including former Head of the Interim Government, Chief Earnest Shonekan, who represented President Olusegun Obasanjo, Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, former Managing Director of Sketch Newspapers, Chief Peter Ajayi and former Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Tribune, Mr. Felix Adenaike. All came to pay their last respect tothe departed soul. The corpse, which was brought by M.I.C corpse bearers, arrived the family compound at about 3.40pm without the usual fanfare and was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Funmilayo Oseni and his two daughters, Ranti and Dolapo who occupied another vehicle coming directly behind. The body was lowered at exactly 4.10pm after a special prayer conducted by the Chief Imam of Keesi community Central Mosque, Abeokuta, Imam Lasisi Seriki. Meanwhile, President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday while mourning the death of the veteran journalist and immediate past presidential spokesman said the needed reforms in the country's media industry rested on people like Oseni. The President, who received news of the death while on a working visit to Imo State, stated that Oseni would be remembered as a man who had great integrity. Obasanjo, in a statement by the Office of Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media Matters, Mrs Oluremi Oyo, noted that he received the sad news "with immense sadness." "The veteran journalist would be remembered as a very decent man of great integrity who did his very best to uphold and propagate the ideals of a profession he loved and lived for. Obasanjo prayed that God Almighty would grant Oseni's soul eternal peace and give his family, relatives and friends the fortitude to bear his demise. Among other mourners include Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Lagos State government. NUJ described his death as a shock, saying as a mark of respect for this departed senior professional colleague, all state councils are directed to observe a one-week period of mourning with effect from November 30. A condolence register has been opened at National Secretariat of NUJ and state councils are equally directed to do same with immediate effect. "Our councils are also directed to cancel all social, activities for one week effective from November 30," NUJ stated.
