Agbeyegbe: NASI urges legal aid for suspects paraded by Police

By Kenneth Ehigiator
Wednesday, December 01, 2004

LAGOS — The Nigerian Aviation Safety Initiative (NASI) has called on lawyers and the human rights community to come to the rescue of two security guards paraded last weekend by the police as killers of its founder and executive director, Late Capt. Jerry Agbeyegbe. The organisation also asked the state Police Commissioner not only to apologise to Capt. Agbeyegbe’s family and the public, but also to resign his appointment, asserting that the state Police Command accepts the contention that it was incompetent to handle investigations into Capt. Agbeyegbe’s killing.

NASI chairman, Capt. Dung Pam who addressed newsmen yesterday wondered why the police who stood by their claim of a fatal motor accident as cause of Capt. Agbeyegbe’s death would now turn around to parade some people as his killers.

According to the group, the paraded suspects may be innocent, especially against the backdrop of initial police reports that Capt. Agbeyegbe died as a result of an accident along the Lagos-Oworonshoki Expressway on the day of the incident.

Capt. Pam said the group’s fears were founded on shoddy Police investigations since Agbeyegbe died on October 12, insisting on government’s institution of a high-powered public judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the case.

"We, of the Nigerian Aviation Safety Initiative (NASI), wish to register again our strong protest against the circus-style police handling of the assassination of its founder and executive director, Capt. Jerry Agbeyegbe.

"We appeal to lawyers to come to the rescue of the two guards paraded last weekend by the police as his killers because they may be innocent.
