Ogun govt 'll continue to respect Osoba, says Daniel

By Dayo Johnosn
Wednesday, December 01, 2004

AKURE — GOVERNOR Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State has said that the state government will continue to accord the immediate past governor of the state, Chief Segun Osoba due respect.

Speaking with newsmen in Akure, the Ondo State capital on the recent face-off with Chief Osoba, Gov. Daniel said that "Chief Osoba is a former governor highly respected, we expect him to behave like a statesman and we do respect him."

Gov. Daniel however denied that Chief Osoba is labelled as security risk in the state.

According to him "Nobody said Chief Osoba is a security risk, he had never been a security risk, you cannot be a risk to government, government has all the wherewithal to deal with all matters, the law is no respecter of any person.

"We have treated him with respect, we will continue to accord him the respect that goes with the position and his position is secured in history.

"But we do not think he should allow himself to be drawn into things that normally does not concern him.

"And if he really want to do anything at all we are just saying that he should do it peacefully and let us debate."

Speaking on his personal relationship with Chief Osoba, governor Daniel said "I have a good relationship with him," adding that He said that the state government would not tolerate violence under any guise.

"We welcome constructive criticism, we want people to take a look at our programme, criticize it and give us their own opinion, we want people to judge by what we are doing, and our country has gone beyond violence.

"We are just insisting that we will tolerate everything but in Ogun state, we will not tolerate violence, he said noting that state government has been prudent in the management of its lean resources.

According to him "we blocked the loopholes as much as possible and other areas of leakages and it was that reason that some people are not quite happy, what we are doing in Ogun state is business unusual, let me assure you that in everything we have done the people are surprise by the enormity of the work done in the state within this 18 months .

"And they think that all these will only be possible lf you go aborrowing, but let me reassure you that we have not borrowed a dime so far."
