BENIN CITY — CHAIRMAN of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Edo State, Mr. Pally Iriase, yesterday, advocated responsible and transparent leadership from the three arms of government, saying that the democratic system which need to be nurtured, may hit the rock if elected officers do not exhibit good morals.
He said that since the beginning of this democracy in the country, the people expect changes in all facets of their lives, declaring that it would be a failure on the side of the political class if they care more about their "pockets" than the people that voted them into power.
Speaking while hosting a forum of Local Government Supervisors in the state, in his Owan East Local Government Council, the ALGON boss noted that it is only through responsible leadership that good and purposeful leadership can be realised.
He stated that "having fought for this democracy that most people even lost their lives on, we need leaders who are not corrupt, people who do not take government appointments as their own personal property. For us to sustain this democracy, we must be honest in our dealings. It is not enough to say we are fighting corruption but we must have to fight it very sincerely for the people to believe us."
Pointing out that "posterity will not forgive us office political office holders if we ignore the masses to continue in abject poverty while we in the corridors of power continue to enrich ourselves."
Iriase noted that the responsibility bestowed on them was enormous, which he said, must be pursued with renewed vigour, determination and total commitment to duties.
He therefore tasked the supervisors in various local governments in the state, to redefine their focus and draw out an economic blueprint that would assist their various local government chairmen actualise the laudable programmes of their administration.
