Nigeria shines at GSM summit
From Sonny Aragba-Akpore, Cape Town, South Africa
NIGERIA's mobile telephone market yesterday took centre stage in Cape Town, South Africa, as operators of the Global System for Mobile telecommunications (GSM) on the continent kicked off the seventh yearly conference on GSM in Africa.
Delegates admitted that given the exponential growth recorded by the country in three years, it would certainly beat South Africa to the second position in less than two years from now.
South Africa started GSM services in 1992 when the state owned Telkom South Africa formed a joint venture company with Vodaphone of the UK to establish Vodacom.
Vodacom, MTN South Africa and Cell C have 19.6 million GSM subscribers. Nigeria's MTN, Vmobile, Glomobile and Mtel have nearly eight million subscribers.
The Nigerian Communications Communication (NCC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr. Ernest Ndukwe said there would be 10 million additional lines by the turn of next year.
