President, others extol Onagoruwa's courage at book launch
By Emmanuel Badejo

PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday praised former Minister of Justice, Dr. Olu Onagoruwa, for his courage and pursuit of justice.

Minister of Justice, and Attorney-General, Akinlolu Olujinmi, gave the commendation on behalf of the President during the launch of a book by Onagoruwa.

The launch of the book entitled: Law and Contemporary Nigeria: Reflections, brought together eminent Nigerians who used the occasion to extol the virtues of the author.

Dignitaries at the occasion included the Minister of Communications, Chief Cornelius Adebayo, Mr. Kehinde Sofola (SAN), an industrialist, Mr. Oba Otudeko, former Minister of Transport, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, former Managing Director of Daily Times and doyen of journalism, Alhaji Babatunde Jose and former President, Nigeria Olympic Committee, Maj.-Gen. Henry Adefowope.

Others were former Chief of General Staff (CGS), Lt.-Gen. Oladipo Diya and the Lagos State Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

Olujinmi described Onagoruwa as a courageous man who has a sense of purpose.

He added that the author had through his selfless service to the nation demonstrated that no matter how a man was misunderstood, his invaluable contributions would stand him out at the end of the day.

Olujinmi stated: "Mr. President has tremendous respect for Onagoruwa," adding that he would be remembered as an individual who stood for principles and justice.

Osinbajo, who spoke on behalf of Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, narrated how Onagoruwa was incarcerated for two weeks over the Maj.-Gideon Okar-led coup of April 22, 1990.

Osinbajo added that his principled stance was legendary and insisted that the former attorney-general was a man to be trusted.

His words: "His courage and conviction on any issue are never in doubt. Very few people and in fact rare in this part of the globe, resign from government positions.

"It is on record that Onagoruwa was the first public officer to resign from government position and I am referring to the fact that he was the only person that resigned from the infamous Gen. Sanni Abacha's military government."
In his review, Chairman, Editorial Board of The Guardian, Dr. Reuben Abati, said that the book was written by a scholar of law and ideas.

Abati noted that Onagoruwa employed topical issues to probe inner causes and details of living, adding that the author had defended the rule of law against State tyranny and men of power.
