Group wants special panel to probe Agbeyegbe's death
By Wole Shadare

NOT satisfied with police investigation of the murder of Captain Jerry Agbeyegbe, some aviation experts have called on the Federal Government to set up a judicial panel of inquiry to unearth the misery surrounding the death of Agbeyegbe.

The Chairman of Nigeria Aviation Safety Initiative (NASI), a body founded by the late pilot, Capt. Dung Pam at a press briefing yesterday said that raising a panel of inquiry was the only way the police could be absolved of complicity in the whole saga.

He alleged that the police were under pressure to wrap up the case, and in the process, the matter was handled in a shoddy manner.

His words: "NASI will stop at nothing to unravel the truth by getting to all concerned in Agbeyegbe's murder. I wonder why the police will not accept their incompetence to perfectly carry out the investigation.

"What we will not accept is the blackmail that he had narcotics on him when in actual fact he was expected to fly a charter operation that morning. We wish to register again our strong protest, the police handling of the assassination of our founder and executive director, Jerry Agbeyegbe."
The Lagos State Police Command had last week Friday paraded some people suspected to be killers of the late Agbeyegbe. Among them, one Juliet Okonkwo, alleged to be with the late safety advocate when the incident happened.

Agbeyegbe, known for his irrepressible voice, was killed on Oworonshoki-Ketu Expressway on the outskirts of Lagos on October 12, 2004.

Police initially had said it was a case of lone accident, but a gaping bullet hole was found on his BMW 5 series car and 29 holes on his body. The car had a minor dent.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineer (NAAPE), as part of ways of immortalising the late pilot, said it would institute a yearly lecture in the memory of Agbeyegbe while an evening was held in his honour at the Skypower Club, Ikeja yesterday.

The Deputy Executive Director of NASI, Mr. Offiong Effanga, disclosed that the body had already contacted prominent lawyers to take up the case to unravel the controversy surrounding Agbeyegbe's death.
