UNICEF wants govt to empower women, kids
From Kemi Kusimo, Enugu
UNITED Nations International Children's Education Fund (UNICEF)
on Monday called on the Federal Government to empower women and children in the country.
At a meeting organised by key officials of UNICEF Zone A and secretaries to the state governments from 10 states in the zone, Dr. Barbara Renold, the deputy representative (programme), UNICEF said the delegation was in Enugu to discuss the welfare of children.
According to her, researches have shown that issues such as micro-economic policies, good governance and oil revenues that have continued to attract government's attention are all about things that impact negatively or positively on the lives of children.
Renold also expressed concern over the alarming dimension the Human Immune Deficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) was taking in Africa, adding that the population of Africa would decrease by half as a consequence of the disease.
The state governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, who was represented by his Deputy, Okechukwu Itanyi, stated that his government would continue to give priority to the welfare of women and children in the state.
He described children as the most vulnerable group, adding that this explained why the programmes and policies of his government were geared towards the advancement and empowerment of women and children in the state.
The governor praised UNICEF for its achievements, adding that it was one of the most important organisations in the United Nations.
