Edo police killing: D.I.G takes over operations

By Benson Agwu,

Correspondent, Benin City

Following the directives of the Nigerian Police, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of training at the force headquarters, Abuja, Musa Abdukadir has taken over the operations of the Edo State command to forestall the incessant killing of policemen in the state by unindentified gunmen suspected to be armed robbers.

The arrival of Abdukadir in Edo State came just as the commands deputy commissioner of police, John Eguakeen and four other Assistant Commissioners of Police have been transferred to the northern states as part of the police authorities determination to overhaul and reinforce the manpower of the command in order to check the serial killings of policemen, increase in crime wave and continuous reported case of armed robbery in the state. Addressing officers of the command at its headquarters in Benin City, on Tuesday, Abdukadir charged them to ensure that they launch a major onslaught on criminals who have been terrorising the communities of Benin City and its environs, making it unsafe for residents.

While boosting the morals of the officers and men of Edo state command, he told them not to abdicate their constitutional responsibility and enjoined them to wake up to their responsibility by policing the community and the people in the society.

The interactive session which Abdulkadir had with policemen was designed to sensitise them on the need to appreciate the nature of their job and the risk involved.

The Edo State command had in the past few months lost over 30 police officers to unidentified gangsters suspected to be armed robbery syndicates, thereby making the state unsafe for uniformed officers.
