Nine states in Nigeria have been named as those to benefit from a $70 million World Bank loan to combat poverty and manage environmental problems at the grassroots level.

The nine states including Adamawa, Imo, Katsina, Enugu,Niger, Bayelsa,Oyo and Benue and the Federal Government are to jointly contribute $8.7million counterparts funding to the projects.

This was made known to participants at a one-day sensitisation workshop organised by the Local Empowerment and Environmental Management Project (LEEMP) in Minna, Niger State.

The Niger State Co-ordinator of LEEMP, Ahmed Ibrahim Matane who made this known at the workshop said the community driven project of the World Bank is to enable the beneficiaries to rehabilitate micro-projects, establish cottage industries and develop infrastructure of the benefiting states at the grassroots level. Matane explained that each participating state is expected to pay a counterpart funding of between ten to twenty-million dollars annually depending on the size of the micro-project and other accompanying components to chosen projects.

Benefiting communities he said are also expected to contribute 10 percent to the project and urged benefiting communities and states to take advantage of the World Bank soft loan to improve their livelihood and that of their families. Participants at the workshop suggested that any loan meant for the rural dwellers should not be allowed to pass through middle men in order to ensure the actualisation of set objectives.
