Principals proffer solution to education problem

All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) has said one of the ways to surmount the challenges and problems of secondary education is to involve all stakeholders in the planning and developing the sector.

At the maiden edition of the summit for stakeholders in secondary education from the nine eastern states in Umuahia, Abia State on Tuesday, ANCOPSS National President, Mr. Nzemeka Olisah, said the stakeholders should be brought together to share their experience on how to improve the sector.

Olisah said indiscipline of students and teachers, poor quality and quantity of education, inadequate funding, dilapidated infrastructure and poor condition of service were some of the problems in the sector that needed to be tackled.

“Many people point fingers at teachers, others blame government, some others blame parents for not living up to expectations while others blame students,” he said.

“The situation is that a comparison of the post-war standard of performance by students and pupils and those of today reveal that while the present day student could not express himself as expected, he is more exposed and versatile,” the ANCOPSS said.

Governor Orji Uzor Kalu urged the school heads to do a deep reflection on ills like cult activity, prostitution, truancy and wandering that beset the secondary school sector so as to find adequate solution to the problems.

“You should work out a way to return our schools to their former glory of being centres for learning and of excellence,” Kalu said.
