Two-year jail term for illegal blood transfusion in Lagos

Laws prohibiting illegal transfusion of
blood to patients in Lagos hospitals have been signed by the state Governor,
Bola Tinubu. It prescribes a fine of N200,000 or two years imprisonment for
defaulters.
The bills which were sent to the State
House of Assembly gone for deliberations since the official commissioning of a
blood screening and certification centre at the Island Maternity in July, got
the official appendage of the state chief executive Tuesday.
Part of the provisions of the laws is
that “it is criminal to give uncertified and unscreened blood to patients
in any hospital in the state; that any wrong administration of blood will carry
same penalty as that of murder and the administrator(s) of such blood will be
regarded as murderers.
It also recommended that stored blood in
any of the hospitals operating in the state should be periodically screened at
least every six months, and a proper certificate of screening should be
obtained before any form of transfusion.
“A lot of lives has been lost to
wrong administration of blood and it will be irresponsible for any government
not to take action on such a serious issue as that affecting the lives of the
citizenry.
We have put a screening and certification
equipment in place, one of the best in Africa, a technology which can rank
amogst the best in the world and we expect that medical practitioners take
advantage of this to reduce cases of wrong blood administration,”
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Leke Pitan said.
The laws prohibiting arbitrary administration of blood in
the state, Pitan emphasized, will help eliminate cases where quacks just carry
out operations, administer blood to patients indiscriminately, and get away
with wanton waste of human lives.
