Last Updated: Wednesday, December 1st, 2004 HOME | Previous Page Eight feared dead in CSM outbreak in Ogun   By Segun Adeleye Reporter, Abeokuta Ikenne, the homestead of the late elder-statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has been thrown into mourning as eight people including students have been reported dead as a result of the outbreak of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis(CSM). The highest figure of five deaths were recorded at the Mayflower School, Ikenne, while the balance of three deaths occurred in the town. The disease, which is peculiar to the Northern part of Nigeria struck at the school's hostel. Investigations by Daily Independent revealed that one Oluwatobi Omoseke Olusegun, a 17-year-old Senior Secondary School Student (SSS), was among the deceased students. The father is a staff of the Primary Health Centre, Siun Owode in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state. Government officials declined comments on the development which Mrs. A. Morafa, Principal of Mayflower, described as awful. She told Daily Independent, "I’m awfully sorry. As a civil servant, I must not grant press interview. I have equally turned down some journalists’ enquiry. I'm not the proper person to comment”. Efforts to speak with the State Commissioner for Health and Education, Dr. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello and Jimi Taiwo respectively, was not successful as both of them were said to have travelled outside the state.
