A meeting of the leaders of the South
South Consultative Assembly was held on Tuesday in Edo State Government House
with Governors Lucky Igbinedion (Edo) and James Ibori (Delta) challenging
members to close ranks so as to realise the set goals of the group in 2007
presidential election.
The meeting, designed to draw the support
of more influential stakeholders from the South South, had in attendance Chief
John Odigie Oyegun, Gen David Ejoor (rtd), Justice Karibi Whyte, Admiral Mike
Akhigbe (rtd), Admiral Festus Porbeni (rtd), Chief Edwin Clark, Chief Raymond
Dokpesi, Dr. Abel Ubeku and Mr. David Ogbomo.
Ibori pledged to support the group
“so long as it remains focused and on course”, and he used the
opportunity to thank everybody that stood by him during his travail, saying
nobody can doubt that he has come to occupy the front line as a “comrade
in the struggle” to ensure better life for his people.
He said, “I believe in the stated
objectives of this group. I’m fully behind any initiative that has to do
with the survival of my brother (Igbinedion) here. We have a bond that binds us
together because from the beginning we realised that nothing could shake us as
long as we stuck together”.
Igbinedion told the assembly leaders to
be firm on their demand for 2007, saying division within their ranks was
evident.
He said he has never hidden his support
for a president of the northern extraction in 2007 and urged the consultative
assembly to agree to fight for the vice-presidency instead of some claiming
that they wanted the number one seat when what they actually wanted was the
number two position.
On Clark’s statement that the group is not partisan,
Igbinedion advised the leaders not to be afraid of partisanship “since
what we are talking about here is power,”
