Last Updated: Wednesday, December 1st, 2004 HOME | Previous Page Dariye, Ulamas sign peace accord By Onoja Audu Correspondent, Jos   Plateau State Governor Joshua Dariye and the Council of Ulamas have signed a peace accord to work together for the growth of the state. Indications of this emerged on Tuesday when Dariye held a private meeting with Ulama leaders and some elders of the state at Old Tudun Wada Government Lodge. It was learnt that the need to have peaceful relationship with the Muslim groups in Jos and to address factors responsible for the ethno-religious crisis of September 7, 2001 that eventually led to the May 18, 2004 emergency declaration. It was learnt that the Tuesday meeting between Dariye and the Ulamas led by Sheik Balarabe Daudu, a political associate of the governor, Yahaya Kwande, a Moslem was to pacify the Moslem leaders who opposed Dariye’s restoration. Though a communiqué was not issued at the end of the meeting, proceedings were later shifted to the residence of Kwande for further deliberations. Dariye on return to power on 18th of November, 2004 had as a matter of priority been reaching out to his opponents through several consultations so as to start a new beginning.         Copyright� 2004.
