Group lists reasons why Ondo13% derivation fund was stopped

By  Adeyemi Adebanjo

Correspondent, Lagos

A group, Great Change Movement of Nigeria (GCMN) which recently sought and got an Abuja High Court injunction stopping the 13 per cent oil derivation accruable to Ondo State, as well as the monthly statutory allocation payable to Ilaje Local Government Area of the state, has given reasons for its controversial ac tion.

In a press statement signed by its President, Akin Orowole, the group said the action was borne out of the flagrant abuse of fund allocation to both the state and local governments, as well as the reckless financial misappropriation by the leadership of both entities.

The statement quoted the group as saying that: “It is on record that Ilajeland, which is the goose that lays the golden egg, is denied all basic necessities of life. Instead of using judiciously the several  billions of naira released by the Federal Government, both the State Governor, Chief Olusegun Agagu, and Ilaje Local Government Chairman, Chief Adebambo Andrew Odono, were busy directing the fund to their personal purses.

“We were alarmed by the fact that Ilajeland remains underdeveloped in spite of the fact that crude oil has been extracted in our domain since 43 years ago”.

The statement added that there was “no justification in the removal of Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC) headquarters from Igbokoda which is the headquarters of Ilajeland and the only oil producing area in the entire Ondo State to Akure, the state capital.

It is also intriguing to note that after the completion of the commission’s secretariat complex in Akure, the State Governor again unilaterally moved it to Oba-Ile, a non-oil producing area! Call it a classical example of using God-given wealth to develop another area at our own expense”.

Concluding, the group said it viewed the governor’s conversion of OSOPADEC former office at Akure to his wife’s office as unbecoming of a state chief executive. “The question is, even if the conversion is necessary, why not convert it to something more beneficial to an average Ilaje man and the poor masses?” the group asked.
