The unbanning of Beninoise goods
The modalities involved in the unbanning of goods from Benin Republic are not clear to me and I
want to use this medium to ask that some explanation of this be done. The sort
of goods that were said to be unbanned from Benin Republic include cotton seeds
(which we used to have in abundance in the North) palm oil and palm kernels and
vegetable oil which the Eastern part of Nigeria is really endowed with. With
the realisation that crude oil is more lucrative than these commodities, our
involvement in the export of crude oil has made us the ultimate loosers. This is because, even though we export
crude oil, the fuel we consume is not Nigerian. It is also sad to observe that
despite the fact that there are a lot of potentials for the production of palm
produce in the east, there is an overabundance of fake palm oil in the market.
What kind of a country is this? I do not understand a situation where we have
resorted to an importation of virtually even pin and toothpick, ostensibly in
the name of free trade within the West African subregion and with the world at
large. I think that the Presidents call for all to go into agriculture is right
despite the fact that sometimes, he does not appear serious about the things he
says. Allowing these goods to enter our country has serious repercussions on
our economy: both from within and outside our country, we consume so much and
produce so little. Yesterday, as I serviced my computer, I saw all of those
tiny micro-chips that made up the computer. It was just then it struck me that
we are not a thinking people. We just consume and consume and consume. So, my
problem is this: will the unbanning of these agricultural products like palm
oil, cotton seeds and textile fabrics in anyway help in rejuvenating our near
comatose economy? Please let the experts, any expert explain this to me,
because I am truly worried.
