Killing of cops: DIG takes over Edo command

    VINCENT ADEKOYE, Benin

POLICE High Command, worried by the frequent killing of cops by armed robbers in Edo State, has deployed Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police, Musa Abdulkadir, to take charge of the area.

Abdulkadir, the DIG (Training) arrived Benin, the state capital, a few days ago just as the High Command also drafted over 500 plain clothe detectives to the state to fish out the cop-killing robbers as well as unravel why the hoodlums have the propensity to attack mostly policemen.

It would be recalled that Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Tafa Balogun, had ordered the immediate mass redeployment of over 3,000 policemen from the command following the killings.

Addressing the personnel at the command’s headquarters yesterday, the DIG lambasted them for watching helplessly while robbers keep killing their colleagues almost weekly.

Mr. Abdulkadir described it as a disgrace that the command could not arrest the robbers despite the level of encouragement given to officers and men nationwide in the past five years.

While urging them to be alive to their calling, the police boss told the cops that they could not afford to abdicate their statutory responsibilities to robbers.

A reliable source confirmed to Daily Champion yesterday that the 500 detectives sent there were to determine what led to the killings.

"The IGP is seriously worried that the cops-killing robbers are operating smoothly, reminding Nigerians of the late dare devil Anini in the old Bendel State some years ago.

"That is why he sent these plain clothed securitymen to the state. He is determined to see to the end of the killings.

"He wants to know why the killings, who are the people involved, what are their mode of operation and where they are operating from?" the source disclosed.
