    IG flays police-civilian clash

THE Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun has expressed dismay over the recent police - civilian clash in Damaturu in which a police barracks was razed. Mr. Balogun made his feeling known during his briefing with police personnel from the north east zone of the country in Abuja.

According to a source, who pleaded anonymity, the I-G was said to be unimpressed with the mannerthe situation was handled by the Yobe State police commissioner, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmed. He said he once promised to provide accommodation for police in the state but wondered how safe then barracks will be if police cannot handle such situation in an appropriate manner.

Our source addedthat Mr. Balogunqueried why with arms at the disposal of policemen, they wereunable to contain the situation and advised them to prepare very well for hardertimes ahead, especially the 2003 polls.

He, however, pledged to bring the culprits to bookbecause policeoperating in hostile environments will have to re-directits focus for effective policing as providedfor by the 1999 constitution.

It would be recalled that police and civilians clashed in Damaturu, Yobe Statecapital when a policeman reportedly shot dead a driver over an argument in the metropolis.

The civilians who witnessed the shooting, reportedlyattacked police formations setting ablaze some blocks at the police barracks and chasing away policemen in some police stations in the capital city in the process.
