    INEC adopts new strategy for polling units

    INDEPENDENT National Electoral Commission (INEC) said last Monday that a new strategy for efficient monitoring of polling units through electronic means would soon be adopted.

    The INEC chairman, Dr. Abel Goubadia who made the disclosure in Lafia, Nasarawa State at the a seminar, "Re-Engineering for a Successful Electoral Process," said the new strategy would help minimise the mistakes of the past and strengthen the electoral process.

    Dr. Goubadia, who was represented on the occasion by a commissioner in the commission, Prof. Morris Iwu, said voters’ registers would be opened in polling centres for people to check their names and detect those who have died.

    He disclosed that voters can also check frown their handsets to know if they are registered to vote.

    The seminar which held at Ibrahim Abacha youth centre, Lafia, he said was for INEC to take a critical look at the past elections and to open itself to criticism and know how it has fared and what to do in the next elections.

    Speaking while declaring open the seminar, Gov. Abdullahi Adamu, advised INEC to embrace criticism of any kind, stressing that it was by so doing that INEC could correct the electoral impefection that have characterised the polity.

    He expressed satisfaction with the calibre of the resource persons and charged them to critically examine the electoral system with a view to addressing some of the problems to reduce electoral friction in the country.
