Troops, fighter jets deployed to Warri
•For LG polls today
SEGUN JAMES,
Warri
FEDERAL
Government moved yesterday to forestall violence in Warri, Delta State during
today’s council election as 500 soldiers, military trucks and Air Force jets
were deployed in the town.
Besides, Naval personnel also took to the
creeks, believed to be the hideouts of insurgents, to ensure that all flanks are
covered.
The controversial election in the three
Warri councils was shifted from last Saturday, November 27 to today due to what
the State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) called "logistic problems."
Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, had warned
against conduct of the polls saying his people would resist it. He cited
unfairness to his people in ward delineation as the main grouse against the
election.
In the run-up to November 27, restive
youths and other concerned indigenes had staged series of protests culminating
in the burning of the Ughelli North DSIEC office by unidentified people in which
property worth over N50 million was torched in the process.
The massive deployment of troops and
military hardware was meant to ward off those opposed to the election.
By morning yesterday, the soldiers paraded
the streets of the oil city in a show of might as they moved in 14 trucks and
six pick-up vans. Two armoured vehicles moved at the head of the parade and also
took up the rear.
Daily Champion
gathered that another set of 1,500 men of the Army and Navy also set sail in
naval boats and vessels to flash points in the riverine area to forestall any
outbreak of violence or the launching of an attack on Warri from the creeks.
The parade of the soldiers coincided with
the meeting of the state security council which was presided over by Governor
James Ibori instead of his deputy, Chief Benjamin Elue.
As at press time, the Governor’s Office
Annnex, Warri, the venue of the council’s meeting, was heavily fortified by
soldiers.
Two Air Force war planes deployed to the Operation
Restore Hope, the joint military task force on the Warri crisis, had in the
last few days been on reconnaissance over Warri and adjoining areas.
