Akwa Ibom indigenes in Lagos launch N150m civic centre

COMFORT EKELEME

GOVERNOR of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah, will be the special guest of honour at the forth coming launch of N150m Akwa Ibom State Community (Akiscom), Lagos next Saturday, December 11 2004.

President of AkisCom, Lagos Obong Nsima Umoh, said this Thursday while briefing newsmen on the activities marking the turning of the sod and official launch of N150 million Akiscom civic centre project, located at Adedapo Street, Surulere.

"When we became a state, we decided to buy a land good enough for our people where we can come together for the upliftment of the entire Akwa Ibom people," he said.

According to Umoh, the essence of this project is to raise fund for the community’s on going education and scholarship scheme, adding that 10 university undergraduates from all major disciplines have so far benefited from the scheme.

He noted that the civic centre which will be three story building will also house hotel suits, which will be managed by a major hotel manager, while the ground floor will be for meeting and other ceremonies.

He however, called on corporate bodies and friends of Akwa Ibom State to come and donate towards actualizing the goal, adding that this will go long way in protecting the interest of Akwa Ibom people living in Lagos.

Dignitaries expected to grace the occasion are, retired Air Vice Mashall, Nsikak Eduak, secretary to the government of the federation, Chief Ufot Ekaette; Deputy Governor of Akwa-Ibom state Obong Chris Ekpengyong; prelate of the Methodist Church, Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr. Sunday Mbang; Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Rita Akpan, among others.
