New structure for BPE

The vice-president, Atiku Abubakar and Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation, has approved, a major reorganisation of the operational structure of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE). The new structure is expected to reposition the bureau for greater effectiveness and further enhance its operations.

With the re-organisation, five Transaction Project Teams have been established to replace the old directorates. A director will head a Transaction Project Team comprising project managers and team members. In addition, two new departments, namely; External Affairs and Finance/Management Support have also been established.

The five Transaction Project Team directors are, Ibrahim S. Njiddah heading Transaction Project Team A; Elder A.A Udofiah-Transaction Project Team B; Mrs. Modupe Abiodun-Wright-Transaction Project Team C; Mrs Irene N. Chigbue-Transaction Project Team D; Benjamin E. Dikki-Transaction Project Team E while Mr. D.E Bagaiya is the director of the new Department of Financial & Management Support.

The re-organisation was approved following a critical re-evaluation of the challenges facing the BPE in the years to come. In particular, the bureau was being reorganised to enable it meet the many challenges that it would encounter as it entered the next stage of privatisation in 2005.

Speedy implementation and effective conclusion of transactions are expected from the re-invigorated bureau.

The next phase of the programme is the most significant in the history of privatisation in Nigeria, as it would involve complex utilities and large enterprises that are 100 percent owned by the Federal Government. Such utilities include power, communications, oil and gas, the ports and railways.
