Gombe Plans Legal Aid Council
From Auwal Ahmed, Gombe

A Directorate of Citizens Mediation is to be established by the Gombe State Government. It will be an arm of the Ministry of Justice and operates as a legal aid council.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Mohamed Umar Zubairu, said that the directorate would come on stream next year to
be manned by a senior state counsel to assist the judiciary in the dispense of justice with ease to the less privilege in the society.

Zabairu told journalists in Gombe that under the programmes, free legal service would be offered to less privileged that are facing trial over civil or criminal offences.

The commissioner said that the Directorate for Citizens Right, a public defence unit would also be established to file and prosecute cases of human rights violation against any citizen of the state.

The establishment of the two directorates, he said was in accordance with the provision of the High Court Laws which says that "where an action is pending the court may promote reconciliation among the parties thereto and encourage and facilitate the amicable settlement there."
He observed that courts rarely apply the principle, which is the most common forum of alternative dispute resolution.
