Media Asked To Protect Democracy
From Simeon Nwakudu, Makurdi

NIGERIAN journalists were yesterday enjoined to eschew negative reporting which would only thrives when media practitioners make positive inputs capable of improving the system.

This was a opinion by the Nasarawa State Deputy Governor Labarau Maka during the Press week organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue Council in Makurdi, the state capital.

Delivering a lecture at the occasion on 'Democracy: The Media and Good Governance' Maka said "I get disturbed when I read in our newspapers about comparisons between the Abacha Administration and the Obasanjo era. The media should realise that democracy is not only about elected officials, but mainly about freedom of expression and societal development."
He added that: "The media should not only report crises in the polity, but it should also make suggestions for the improvement of this form of government."
The deputy governor appealed to Nigerians to take a stand to defend democracy at all costs, adding that military rule will drag the state backwards for several years.

He, however, said the imperfections of the nation's democratic experience must be quickly addressed to make for stability.

Maka noted that: "Our democracy is in transition, because our parties are yet to find their feet. We must ensure that our parties find their feet to act as a catalyst for democratic delivery of services."
