Owerri Agog as Imo Women Celebrate Day

Thousands of women from the 27 local government areas of lmo State yesterday trooped to the Dan Anyiam Stadium Owerri to celebrate the Imo Women's Day. The programme was initiated last year by the wife of the Governor and the Founder of the Heartland Child Care Foundation (HCCF), Mrs Theresa Udenwa. The occasion, which attarcted the presence of the wife of the second republic Vice President, Mrs Beatrice Alex Ekwueme and wives of several state governors, witnessed the distribution of 60 sowing machines, four oil mill machines, five palm kernel cracker and five garri processing machines by Mrs Udenwa to different women cooperatives. Mrs Udenwa said the essence of the annual event was to celebrate and showcase the lmo women, stressing that this year's celebration has the theme: "Women Empowerment: The Answer to Sustainable Economic and Social Development." This, she said, would go a long way in harnessing the potentials of lmo women. She noted that the highlight of the celebration was the honouring of six distinguished lmo daughters, including the wife of the Chief of Naval Staff, Mrs Treasure Afolayan, Senior Special Assistant to the President on NEPAD, Mrs Chinyere Asika, Director of Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE), Mrs Ndi Okereke Onyiuke. ln his speech, Governor Achike Udenwa, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ebere Udeagu, said his administration would not waiver in the resolve to carry women along in the course of all government activities. He said his government had ensured proper representation of women, explaining that the state presently has six female permanent secretaries, ten women directors in the civil service, seven female judges, two female commissioners and three council chairmen among others. "We can go on and on. l must add that lmo women have proved themselves dependable allies in development and governance," said.
ln their separate remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Gloria Chukwukere, Council Chairmen of ldeato North, Mrs Eudora lgwe, ldeato South, Mrs Maria Mbanuzue, Onuimo, Mrs Rita lbemere, Owerri North, Ken Oparaochaekwe noted that the state government had in the past years accomodated women in all it's activities, especially in the areas of skill acquisition, poverty alleviation, provision of soft loans, among others. The wife of the Chairman of Owerri Municipal council, Mrs Phil Ehirim said she had embarked on women empowerment programmes in the council which are in compliance with the state government's tripod vision of Agriculture, Reorientation and lndustrialisation, as their women had been encouraged to get involved in farming activities in order to encourage massive food production in the state.
