Yes No Indifferent View results Lagosians Assured on Critical Care By Shaka Momodu, 12.04.2004 Nigerians, especially residents of Lagos State, have been assured of the state government's commitment to providing specialised and critical care, involving open heart surgery, kidney transplantation and Neurosurgery within its healthcare system. Giving this indication at a news conference the Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Femi Olugbile, said the establishment and upgrade of the facilities at the Hospital's Critical Care Unit (CCU) signposts the arrival of the state at the world stage. While reviewing the open heart surgery performed on four patients, under an arrangement between the state government and Global Eagle Foundation, the CMD said plans are afoot for a quarterly or bi annual visitation by medical experts for the open heart surgery. He said, the late arrival of equipment donated by Global Eagle Foundation explains the fact that they can only perform four surgeries overall instead of the planned 2 per day adding that with the absence of any logistic complications the number of patients to be worked on will increase. Describing the Critical Care Unit as being second to none in the country, Dr. Olugbile said plans are afoot to open up the unit to patronage from other organisations outside the public sector for referral purposes.
