Igbo Presidency: Commissioner Defends Kalu
By Stephanie Omojafor, 12.04.2004
As criticisms continue to trail the recent declaration by Governor Orji Kalu of Abia State to run for the presidency in 2007, critics of the presidential ambition have been described as naive and lacking firm understanding of what a presidential quest entails. Speaking to THISDAY recently, the state commissioner for Special Duties, Chief Chuka Odom said those who either think the governor's declaration would hurt their personal chances or that his declaration is a mere front for a more credible candidate from the North "are totally naive, absurd and out of tune with the political realities on ground." He explained that "the varied and mixed reactions from various segments of the media and commentators provoked by declaration, few weeks ago, by Orji Uzor Kalu to contest the 2007 presidential elections are likely to mislead the public in so far as they are based on wrong or false premise or borne out of outright ignorance of the facts." According to him " it appears that a few of these commentators believe that the governor's declaration may hurt the chances of the Igboman to emerge president in 2007, while another school of thought is of the view that the governor is 'acting' or 'fronting' for some other person or group of persons." Odom pointed out that "the former contention is based on the erroneous belief that the declaration will militate against the work of a committee set-up by the South-East political caucus to interview and recommend candidates of Igbo extraction interested in contesting the 2007 presidential elections." He maintained that "the thinking among this group is that the Igbo must agree on a single candidate and support the said candidate enmasse and unanimously in order to realize the presidency for Ndigbo in 2007." Odom dismissed the Senator Arthur Nzeribe's screening committee set up few months ago in Umuahia, by the South-east political caucus as "a loose association of some past and present elected representatives and some handpicked individuals from the zone to interview Igbo interested in contesting the 2007 presidential elections."
