Power Outage Stalls Flights at MMIA
By Eugene Agha, 12.04.2004
For several hours on end, flights in and out of the nation's premier international airport, the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), were brought to a halt on Thursday due to power failure Indeed, airline operators were seen making frantic efforts to get additional aviation fuel to be able to accommodate flight that were cancelled midway into the journey. No official reasons was however given by the airport authority but Major-General Buba Marwa, revealed that their flight which was already set to land at about 1 p.m. was later turned back because their pilot could not get ground clearance from the airport towers. Marwa who was scheduled to deliver a paper entitled "Answering the Nation's Security Problems," at a lecture organised by the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN) last Thursday drove into the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, several hours behind schedule. According to him, their flight which took off at about 12 noon from Abuja later made a u-turn back to the Federal Capital, sine their pilot could not communicate with airport officials on ground in Lagos, but that they were later told that it was due to electricity failure at the MMIA.
