Emotions as Agbeyegbe is buried

By Kenneth Ehigiator
Saturday, December 04, 2004

TEARS flowed freely yesterday, as the body of slain founder and executive director of Nigeria Aviation Safety Initiative NASI, Captain Jerry Agbeyegbe, was buried in his family compound at Aja Ojobo, Ekurede Town, Warri, Delta State.

Before the internment of his remains at about 2:00pm, a funeral mass had earlier been conducted in his honour at Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral, Warri, where the officiating priest, Rev. Father Oghenejode Abaka (Jnr.), challenged the Federal Government to fish out the killers of Captain Agbeyegbe and bring them to book.

In the homily, Rev. Father Abaka said Capt. Agbeyegbe had played very well his part on earth and was already sleeping in the bosom of the Lord, especially as he stood for the truth all his life.

He said there was no way people who abhorred truth could have allowed a truthful and straightforward person as the slain pilot to live.

Rev. Father Abaka said the truth about the deceased’s death will always prevail no matter how the killers tried to suppress it.

His message for all was "let us look into the life of Capt. Agbeyegbe and imbibe his sterling qualities." The first reading at the mass had earlier been taken from the book of Wisdom, chapter 3, verses 1-9 and read by the first son of the late aviation safety advocate, Mr. Tito Agbeyegbe, while the second son, Kay Agbeyegbe, took the second reading from the book of Thessalonians, chapter 4, verses 13-18. Present at the burial ceremony were representatives of Nigerian Aviation Safety Initiative, National Union of Air Transport Employees-NAAPE and Kings Airlines, the late Capt. Agbeyegbe’s last employers.
