Justice Party wins Warri South-West council polls

By Austin Ogwuda
Saturday, December 04, 2004

ASABA —AMIDST confusion and protests over the re-scheduled local government polls in the three Warri councils, the Justice James Omo-Agege-led Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) yesterday in Asaba declared Mr. David Tonwe of Justice Party (JP) as the winner of the Warri South-West council polls. Delta State is PDP-dominated with only one member of JP in the 29-member State House of Assembly.

Investigation however showed that it might not be said to be an upset because according to staunch PDP members "the man (Tonwe) that won on the ticket of JP was actually a PDP candidate". It was further gathered that the backing of the JP candidate followed sharp disagreement among the state leadership of PDP and its national headquarters in Abuja over choice of candidates.

Announcing the result in Asaba, yesterday, the Returning Officer for the local government area, Mr. Emiko Eda stated that David Tonwe of Justice Party won the election with sixty thousand, eight hundred and eighty-nine votes to beat other contestants.

According to him, "Mr. Asule Agboronfordeyan of the ANPP came second with three thousand, three hundred and eighty votes, AD came third with two thousand, five hundred and sixty-eight votes while David Atikpekpe of the PDP came last with one thousand, six hundred and ninety-one votes".

Meanwhile, the chairman of DSIEC Justice Omo Agege has stated that the results of the chairmanship election in Warri-South and Warri North would be announced today.
