World Bank spends $1.6bn on Nigeria this year

By Chinyere Amalu
Saturday, December 04, 2004

ABUJA— The World Bank has spent over 1.6 billion US dollars in various developmental projects in Nigeria in 2004 just as it proposes to embark on new ones amounting to 500 million dollars. Country Director of World Bank, Mr. Hafez Ghanem disclosed this yesterday at a meeting with the Minister of Education, Prof. Fabian Osuji. Ghanem stated that the Bank is prepared to partner with the Federal Government in the provision of education at all levels.

According to him, "education is on top of our agenda just as it is with the Nigerian government. We want to go beyond assisting only on basic education down to the secondary and tertiary levels so there could be a balanced approach". He said their concern is how to improve on implementation of existing projects and to kick off new ones with immediate effect.

In his response, the minister said his ministry "is always in support of the World Bank assisted projects" adding that it is a big challenge for the Federal Government to give free education to the average Nigerian child for a period of nine years.

According to him, "we are ready to go beyond the basic education as we should not neglect the tertiary institutions which demand much for the Nigerian child. We can work out the way this should be done since basic education is so important in the early life of every child".

Professor Osuji said that Nigerians value higher education, stating that it is very important that both basic and tertiary education are carried out simultaneously. "We can achieve this by cooperating with the World Bank and make things work out better", he stated.
