AWKA— DESPITE effort by the Anambra state Police command to exonorate itself from the allegation of complicity in the recent mayhem in Anambra state, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Agunwa Anakwe has indicted the police saying that they openly watched while the hoodlums burnt and destroyed public property. Anaekwe descibed the Anambra attack as "terrible", and called on the Federal Government to set up a panel of inquiry to probe the crisis.
Also, the Vice-president of Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic affairs, Anambra state chapter, Alhaji Dauda Ajagu has condemned the attack, describing it as "shocking, terrible and unbelievable", He urged the Federal Govevrnment to urgently make funds available for the repair of the damaged public biuldings.
Ajagu called on religious leaders across the country to declare national fasting and prayer sessions for Anambra state as a way of solving the crisis that has bedeviled the state in the last few years.
At a press briefly in Awka Anaekwe said he shedded tears when he haerd how the police openly watched while publlic buildings and property were destroyed. Anekwe also expressed sadness that three weeks after the attack the Federal Government has not sent any delegation or sent any condolence message to the people of Anambra state.
"What happened in Anambra state is very very terrible. It has never happened anywhere in the country or in any part of the World. It is very very condemnable that people would instigate and encourage the vandalization of public property with men of Nigeria police standing by and watched the drama.
"Before the mayhem started there was a security report available to a common man let alone the police about the attack. The commissioner of police confirmed that they knew about it and still there was no attempt to pre-empt it or arrest it when it started. We therefore, had a situation, for three days, it was like hell let loose yet the police could not do anything.
"A probe panel from the Federal Government is very urgent, very very urgent. And the probe panel is to determine the culprit, evaluate the damage and propose reconstruction", Anaekwe said.
