•••Aka Ikenga condemns violence

By Tony Nwankwo
Saturday, December 04, 2004

A prominent Igbo socio-cultural group, Aka Ikenga has condemned what it described as the violent and crude attempts at making Anambra state ungovernable, describing the situation as a criminal act that had been going on with impunity. In a statement in Lagos by its Secretary-General, Barrister Goddy Uwazurike, Aka Ikenga said Anambra State currently wears the look of terrorist infested areas in the African continent.

"Today, Anambra State wears the look of Dafur (Sudan), Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Congo and Liberia. These countries are receiving the efforts of our dear President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who has spared no efforts in roping in the combatants. We expect Anambra State to be given the same treatment", the statement said.

They condemned the disgraceful act which they said must stop, reminding the Nigerian people that those who were in power in the 60s, failed until it engulfed the whole nation with millions of lives lost. The statement reminded Anambra people who were leading the attack to burn down the State of three immortal statements of the great Zik of Africa. According to Aka Ikenga, Zik had said: "In the 70s: No Condition is Permanent; In the 80s: History will vindicate the just and in the same 80s: The wicked shall never go unpunished".

The group lamented the role played by police chiefs in the violence. "To the police chiefs, Aka Ikenga finds it strange that with the arson, looting, broad day brigandry, bombings and unmitigated violence in Anambra State, you have failed to arrest and prosecute the criminals", adding "If the insurgents who daily enter the state to carry out their Satanic activities can overwhelm you, then something is wrong!".

Reminding the police of their primary responsibility, the statement said: "The protection of Nigerians is your primary responsibility. If Nigerians cannot be protected, then there is a justification for the establishment of a state police. At least, the assets and lives of people in Anambra State will be protected", they pointed out.
